30-Minute Salmon Burgers with Avocado Salsa

Salmon Burger with Avocado Salsa

Feeding your family delicious meals shouldn’t always take all day long. If you follow me, you know that we eat good! Yes, I have been cooking for years, so many of my learned techniques allow me to almost cook with my eyes closed. Nevertheless, I still prefer meals that don’t tie me down to the kitchen for hours.

This salmon burger was the perfect, quick, and tasty meal. Growing up, my mom always made salmon patties from canned salmon. I would watch her pick out all the bones and unwanted parts, then form it into patties. As an adult, I just could not bring myself to buy that can and have always used fresh salmon for my patties or burgers. No diss to my mom, because she can definitely cook well, but I think fresh anything always tastes better than frozen or canned.

I have experimented with many kinds of ingredients when making salmon patties. I have added corn, peppers, onions, you name it. This recipe is simple and doesn’t contain a bunch of other ingredients. It still doesn’t lack in flavor. The flavoring comes mostly from the spices and the cilantro.

How to Make Salmon Patties Bind

If you are like me and enjoy watching cooking shows, you have probably seen Jamie Olivers’, “Quick and Easy Food”. He introduced me the method I use in this recipe to chop the salmon. I always thought you had to use eggs and a good amount of breadcrumbs to help the patties keep form. However, his method proved otherwise. It is literally genius.

You chop half of the salmon into small chunks, then chop the other half up until it is super fine like mush. Then you mix the mushy part with the chunks and it binds together super well. I still use a very small amount of breadcrumbs in this recipe just for extra bind, but you could honestly omit them all together. This recipe does not call for any eggs.

Avocado Salsa

The avocado salsa in this recipe is inspired by It is the perfect topping for this burger. The lime really stands out and the salt makes it all the better. I prefer kosher salt, because the morsels are more pungent, allowing you to use less. If spicy is your thing, I recommend adding in some cayenne pepper, or even red pepper flakes if you can handle it.

How to Serve

I served this salmon burger on a bun, but you could also be fancy and serve it on top of salad greens. Both would be a delicious option and you can still use the chipotle dressing for either. There are many recipes out there for making your own sauces and I have used them in the past, but for this burger I went straight to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of chipotle dressing. I didn’t feel like putting in the extra effort to make a homemade sauce and it was still just as good.

Remember, don’t convince yourself that quality food has to take all day and know that it is ok to incorporate some store-bought items into your homemade meal.

I hope you enjoy this one!
