2020 Small Business Gift Guide

The Best Christmas Gifts for 2020

We have all been to a Christmas party where they did a White Elephant gift exchange. The funny thing is that these gifts most often consist of gifts that each person previously received from someone else. You know… the ridiculously smelling body spray or candle that you didn’t need. Or the ugly clock your grandma gave you that you definitely didn’t need. Yea…those kinds of items.

The Pressure to Buy Presents

It is so crazy to me how many of us succumb to the pressure to buy for people at Christmas time. I am not talking about the genuine desire to love on people through gift-giving. I am talking about things like being forced into the family gift exchange or your own personal guilt of feeling like you “have to” get gifts for certain people.

Yes, part of the Christmas season is about giving, but not giving out of pressure. This pressure often leads to people buying random gifts for people, with little thought, just to check the box and say they gave. These are the gifts that end up at white elephant parties.

What about those gift exchanges where we all agree to spend $50 (or whatever amount) on each other? I used to think this was the best idea so that everybody gets a gift of equal value.

However, I have since changed my mind. These types of exchanges seem to focus more on just making sure you hit the dollar amount, rather than genuinely trying to love on somebody through gift-giving.

In my mind, it makes sense to just keep your gift. If I was going to spend $50 on you and you were going to spend $50 on me, we could literally just keep our own money and buy ourselves something we really need.

How to Give Better Christmas Gifts This Year

My challenge to you this year is to give differently. Think about who you are shopping for and really consider how you can help them, be of service, or really make them smile. Even consider gift options that might be considered non-traditional.

If your friend is in the market for a new home, consider gifting them with something to help them in that process. Maybe they could use some help paying for a home inspection. If your friend is a mom and struggling with juggling everything and working from home with kids around. Maybe she could use a gift card from your friends’ home cleaning business.

If you happen to know the goals your friends or loved ones are working on, also consider ways in which you could help them reach those goals. It could be purchasing them a gift certificate with a Virtual Assistant company or buying them a book that would really help them or paying for a course they need to take.

Another great Christmas gift idea is simply supporting your friend’s small business. Maybe your friend sells skincare products. You could literally buy products from your friend as a “gift” to them! These are things that your loved ones will appreciate because it shows them you believe in them.

This year, make it a goal to think outside the box and support small businesses for your gift purchases!
